The Songwriter: **Rising Stars- Review** '

Lots of artists claim to have soul. It's a word that gets bandied around rather frequently these days. Some artists have it and some just don't. In his cover of Sam and Dave's classic tune, James Brown proudly belted out “I'm a soul man” and he certainly meant it. Brown sang every song like his life depended on it. Every note, every lyric, every pause had soul. Other artists, however, who claim to have soul seem rather lacklustre in that department.

When Brandon Flowers of The Killers sang “I got soul but I'm not a soldier”, it felt a little flat. I can't help but think of Bill Bailey's parody lyrics “I got ham but I'm not a hamster.” To have soul, not just the genre, but the attitude and the spark - you have to give something really special. And this is exactly what G Miley and The Soul Street Orchestra do. Dublin born singer-song writer Graham Miley describes the group's music as “inspirational soul, with uplifting pop tones,” and I can't disagree. His genre mixing melodies sound fresh, while his raconteur lyrics tell a story that the audience just can't wait to hear. What is really special about Miley is his voice, a truly soulful force with a complexity of tone that is found in only the most accomplished of singers.'
